The animal genetics group Genus has invested £8.7 million cash for a 49% stake in a joint venture with Shaanxi Yangling BeSun Agricultural Group. Genus will also provide breeding stock to the business, which when fully operational will slaughter 10 million pigs a year. This is only one of a number of ventures that Genus is interested in to expand their presence in China. China is expected to produce 51.6 million tons of pork this year out of a world total of 104.4 million tons and will consume 52 million tons.
