The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week estimated this year’s wine-grape production at 3.7 million tons. If California crushes the 4.1 million tons of grapes expected, this year’s production will be up 9% over 2011, the highest since 2009. Even with the high supply, prices are expected to remain steady. Demand is also high as wine and grapes are currently in short supply, and major wineries such as E&J Gallo and Delicato Family Vineyards are announcing plans of expansion.
