China Targets Dairy Industry

China is increasingly turning to Australia to secure future supply of food for its people.  China Investment Corp. (CIC), which has approximately US $190 billion to invest in foreign ventures, is looking into investing in two dairy operations in Tasmania worth more than $200 million, and which have good capacity for expansion.  The deal would attract scrutiny from the Foreign Investment Review Board and could re-ignite tensions on the subject of Chinese investment in Australian agriculture so soon after the approval for China to purchase the Australian cotton operation Cubbie Station.  The CIC would be expected to team up with another dairy company such as Wahaha Group or Mengniu for the purchase.
