The Australian government has signed a deal proposing to increase the size of three salmon farms owned by Petuna, Tassal and Huon Aquaculture in Macquarie Harbor in Western Australia by 63% to 926 hectares. Salmon farming is one of the fastest growing industries in Australia – growing by almost $1 million a week, or $250,000 million in the past five years. The sector produced 30,000 tons in 2011 and is expected to produce 80,000 tons this year.
