Unitus Seed Fund Launches Second Venture Capital Fund

Bengaluru and Seattle-based Unitus Seed Fund is launching a second India-focused venture capital fund with a corpus of $50 million to invest in startups focused on creating high impact in the fields of agriculture, education, fintech, and healthcare, according to the Times of India.

Led by partners Dave Richards, Will Poole, Srikrishna Ramamoorthy, Ravi Venkatensan, and Srikanth Iyer, Unitus’ first $23 million fund was launched in 2012 backed by a field of international investors including TV Mohandas Pai, Dr. Ranjan Pai, Vinod Khosla, Bill Gates, Steve Singh, Desh Deshpande, Romesh Wadhwani, Michael Dell, Hemendra Kothari among others, according to  Tech Portal. The majority of the investors backing Unitus’ first fund are also backing the second fund.

The firm’s first fund is nearly deployed, backing 23 startups of which eight have raised Series A round of funding, two have raised Series B rounds, and one is close to completing a Series C round.  The fund’s portfolio includes DriveU, Hoopcampus, Blowhorn, and VillFarm Agrisolutions, which Unitus led an early stage investment round for in September 2015. The portfolio has also seen a high survival rate according to theTimes of India, with only three write offs and two partial recoveries.

“At a time when there is a pullback by some investors, it is important that we have money to help our companies survive with follow-on funding,” Will Poole, co-founder and managing partner of Unitus, told theTimes of India.

This high level of success has worked to attract mainstream venture capital funds into subsequent investment rounds for the fund’s portfolio companies, which are rated in terms of impact within their sector through including incremental income generation, job creation, increased access to information and supply chains, and increased efficiency, reports Tech Portal.

“When we went to meet potential investors for the first fund, we got blank stares. Now they understand what we are doing,” Srikrishna Ramamoorthy, partner with Unitus told the Times of India.
